East Palo Alto is Believing...
Last month, Crossing the 101, a book about rugby in East Palo Alto was released by Rob Holder and Mike Klis. East Palo Alto has a history of great rugby players, dating back to the players who crossed the 101 to play for the Palo Alto XOs (PAXOs). And let's not forget Eagles 7's player, Folau Niua, who came from EPA.
Rob Holder discussed the challenges of establishing EPA Rugby in a recent interview with "This is American Rugby." In a small community with a median income of sub $50k and a lack of support and financing for kits, equipment and fields to play on, Holder said the biggest challenge was getting the players to believe. Believe in their capabilities as rugby players, believe in their brothers and believe that they could emerge victorious.
Well, EPA has a reason to believe, as they have players on the roster in PRO Rugby's debut season! The EPA Razorbacks are well represented by Fatai Vailala, who signed with Sacramento and Siupeli Sakalia who signed with San Francisco. Several other players have been working with PRO Rugby clubs to earn a spot and include LangiLangi Haupeakui, Isei Fehoko, Ronald Dwyer, Samuela Vailala and David Sio! Congrats to the EPA Razorbacks.
