A reminder about sideline barriers on synthetic turf fields.
This issue has been raised again where several clubs are using Synthetic turf fields due to the wet conditions making grass fields too wet to play on or just unavailable. Under the NCRFU Safety Protocols clubs are required to have barriers from goal line to goal line. Whilst desirable, It is not required that barriers be on both sides. Where a field only has a barrier fence on 1 sideline, all of the fans, coaches, reserve players and medics must all stand on that fenced side of the field. This effectively leaves the sideline with no fenced barrier to just have a touch judge and a field monitor with vest as the only 2 people on the side with no barrier. The field monitor in this case would instruct persons who intended to stand on the sideline with no barrier, to instead stand behind the barrier on the fenced side of the field The pictures above and below are of delineators which are $15-20 a piece and with a rope or tape make a fence barrier for grass or turf fields. Delineators are a practical solution but they are not the only type of product available for this purpose of barrier fencing the sideline. Under section C. Field Requirements 1. Exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis by the NCRFU Executive. Please apply for permission in advance as expecting forgiveness after incidents has occurred is not advisable. Divisional Coordinators are open to questions & clarifications. Please understand that the NCRFU Executive does not meet every week so if your club is applying for an exception it needs to be approved by the NCRFU Executive prior to kickoff of the match rather than just applied for to the Divisional Coordinator on last minute notice. | Below text is from "NCRFU Safety Protocol-August, 2011" - Click to view complete PDF C. Field Requirements 1. Sideline Barriers from goal line to goal line will be maintained a suitable distance beyond the touch lines. As a general rule, the Sideline Barriers must be at least 5 meters from the touchline. Exceptions will be considered on a case by case basis by the NCRFU executive. Only two CIPP registered coaches, and CPR-qualified trainers may stand inside the barriers. Replacement players are NOT permitted inside the barrier until requesting entry into the match. Example - SMRFC finds it easier at most stadium turf venues with stands on both sidelines in San Mateo, to pull caution tape from the goal lines to the stands, shutting down the track, which is usually part of the permit anyway, because the touch line is usually right against the track, players and teammates can sit on track against the base of stands providing adequate space for refs etc……people using the track not involved with Rugby, are not aware of what is happening and could get in the way of a play coming out of bounds, balls kicked into touch, better and safer to just shut down track for a few hours |
